Module 5.Intercultural communication: European cultural dimensions and communication styles

View content

Regarding the basic principles of intercultural communication, we will use the standard framework of Geert Hofstede’s cultural dimensions: power distance, masculinity versus femininity, individuality, uncertainty avoidance (risk-adversity) and time-orientation. We will look at how these dimensions affect and influence communication, but also the view on society and, more particular, education.

In a second part of the module we will look at the intercultural encounter from a more personal perspective, focusing on the concept of culture shock, both in it’s positive and it’s more problematic consequences (verbal and nonverbal communication, cultural misunderstandings or “taboo subjects” for example). What happens when people from different cultures meet and how can their encounter become a successful one? What does ‘acculturation’ mean and how does it affect ones identity?
